The unromantic half
The name on the ticket has to match the passport
Not the name you will have once the paperwork clears — the name in the document, on the day you fly. This catches somebody every year, it is entirely avoidable, and it is one of five pieces of admin that are trivial eight months out and expensive three weeks out.
The name problem
Two safe answers, and one that is not
Either travel on your existing passport and book in that name, changing it when you get home — which is what most couples do and is the simpler answer by a distance.
Or change the name first, get the new passport physically in your hand, and only then book. Allow far longer than the published processing time.
What does not work is booking in the married name and hoping the passport arrives. If it does not, you are not flying, and the airline is under no obligation to help you.
- A marriage certificate is not a travel document and does not bridge a mismatched ticket
- It is still worth carrying for hotel bookings in one name and a passport in another
- Six months of passport validity beyond your return date, in most of this region
- And two to four genuinely blank pages for visas on arrival

Five things
All easy early, all expensive late
That asymmetry is the only reason this site exists.

Passport names
The one that catches people. Two safe answers, and one very common mistake that ends with somebody not flying.
The name problem
Visas and entry
Rules change without notice and vary by nationality. Check at source when you book and again a month out — and watch for single-entry visas on multi-country routes.
What to check
Insurance
Medical evacuation is not optional on a remote safari. Then check the policy does not exclude the gorilla trek you have booked.
What it must cover
Health
A conversation with a travel clinic six to eight weeks out, with your actual route in hand — because malaria risk varies within a country.
What to ask
Money on the ground
What is included, how tips work, why small notes matter, and the card that gets blocked at the worst possible moment.

The Newlywed Travel Checklist
Every administrative thing a honeymoon needs, with how far ahead to do it. Cheap early, expensive late.
- The name problem, and the two safe answers
- Passport validity and blank pages
- Visas and travel authorisations
- Insurance that covers what you actually booked
- Vaccinations and malaria
- Money on the ground
- What to do at twelve, six, three and one month
- The week before
- A checklist to print
No cost, no obligation. We ask for an email so we can send it and, if you want it, follow up once.
The timeline
What to do, and when
Only two of these have hard external deadlines. The rest simply get harder the longer you leave them.
| When | Do this |
|---|---|
| 12 months | Decide the month. Book gorilla permits if they are in the plan — a hard daily cap. |
| 9 months | Confirm the itinerary and hold camps. Peak dates go now. |
| 6 months | Book international flights, in the name on the passport you will travel on |
| 4 months | Check passport validity and blank pages. Start a name change if doing one. |
| 3 months | Buy insurance, and check it covers the activities you booked |
| 2 months | Travel clinic, with your actual route rather than just the country |
| 1 month | Re-check visa and entry requirements at source |
| 1 week | Tell the bank. Small notes. Confirm the first transfer in writing. |
Before you ask
The questions this raises
Can we travel on a marriage certificate if the names do not match?
No. A marriage certificate is not a travel document and it does not reconcile a ticket that disagrees with a passport.
Book in the name in the passport you will actually carry. It is the simplest answer and it removes the problem entirely.
How long does a passport name change take?
It varies by country and it varies by season, and published estimates are estimates. The safe approach is to assume longer than quoted and not to book flights until the new document is physically in your hand.
Most couples find it easier to travel on the existing passport and change the name when they get back.
Does our insurance cover gorilla trekking?
Check, because a meaningful number of policies exclude it — sometimes explicitly, sometimes by classing it as an expedition or a hazardous activity.
The same applies to riding, walking safaris and microlights. And the policy must cover medical evacuation, which on a remote safari is the line that actually matters.
Do we need yellow fever vaccination?
It depends on your nationality, your route, and where you have travelled before arriving — and it is a document check at the border rather than a health recommendation.
This is a question for a travel clinic with your actual itinerary in front of them, six to eight weeks before you fly. Not a question for a website, including this one.
